NOAA recently announced an exciting milestone: Cordell Bank and Gulf of the Farallones national marine sanctuaries have been expanded to protect more of what is called the “Blue Serengeti” off the California Coast. The sanctuaries are destination feeding areas for endangered blue and humpback whales, sharks, salmon and seabirds that travel tens of thousands of miles. We talk with Maria Brown, Superintendent of Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, about the expansion, what it means to California, and how you can get involved with national marine sanctuaries, “America’s underwater treasures.”

Everyday Action: Learn about your national marine sanctuaries, help survey beaches, join field adventures, or volunteer at visitor centers or sanctuary advisory councils.
